Lakshya Sen wins Gold at Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham: India's Lakshya Sen scripted history on Monday by winning his maiden gold in the badminton event of men's singles of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham after defeating Malaysia's mighty Tze Yong NG 19-21, 21-9, 21-16. This is India's 20th gold medal in CWG 2022. The 20-year-old Lakshya, participating in the Commonwealth Games for the first time in his career had a tough battle against mighty Ng Tze Yong. The Malaysian shuttler was in sublime form in Birmingham. In the quarter-finals, Ng had stunned reigning world champion, Loh Kean Yew, before defeating former World No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth in the semi-final.
Despite losing the opening set, Lakshya did not let the pressure get best of him and he displayed an aggressive game to make a solid comeback and win his first Commonwealth gold. Earlier, Lakshya had won gold in Asian Junior Championship 2018. Apart from this, he was also part of the Indian team that won the Thomas Cup 2022.
earlier, India's badminton star PV Sindhu clinched her maiden women's singles gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022 by defeating Canada's Michelle Lee 2-0 on Monday. Sindhu defeated Glasgow 2014 Games gold medalist Michelle 21-15, 21-13.
