Vijay Hazare Trophy: Tons from Shaw, Iyer power Mumbai posting historic 400-run total
Mumbai became the second team after Madhya Pradesh in the history of Indian domestic cricket to post a total of 400 or more in a 50-over affair
While we Indians are eagerly waiting for the high-voltage clash against Pakistan for the second time in the Asia Cup, the Mumbai cricket team has set a massive record in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. On Sunday, the Ajinkya Rahane led side became the 2nd team after Madhya Pradesh in the history of Indian domestic cricket to post a total of 400 or more in a 50-over affair.
Mumbai chose to bat first after winning the toss against Railways at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The opening duo Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane took the field and were off to a decent start.
But before they could build a healthy partnership, Rahane lost his wicket to Prashant Awasthi after adding just 3 runs against his name. Services may have celebrated that dismissal but they had no idea what would fall next on their way.
Shreyas Iyer joined Prithvi Shaw after the first loss and they both stitched a humongous partnership of 161 runs for the second wicket. Meanwhile, the U-19 World Cup winning skipper continued his sublime form and slammed a century, but unfortunately, he departed in the 26th over. Shaw ended up scoring 129 runs off just 81 deliveries including 6 sixes and 14 boundaries.
After toiling much hard, services finally found a way to dent Mumbai's batting line-up but there was more destruction on the cards for them.
Surya Kumar Yadav was the next man who joined the party and along with Iyer, he took over the job of punishing the opponent bowlers. The duo built yet another 100+ run partnership and took the team total beyond 300 run mark.
After Shaw’s ton, it was Iyer who slammed a brilliant hundred while Yadav got a half-century before losing his wicket in the 43rd over. He ended up scoring 67 off 55 deliveries where he hit 2 sixes and 5 fours.
The next man to return to the dressing room was Iyer who was lost his wicket in 144. He smacked 10 big sixes during his stint along with 8 boundaries.
Mumbai’s last wicket was Shivam Dubey who went for a golden duck. However, Siddhesh Lad (30) and wicketkeeper Aditya Tare (17) built a crucial 44-run partnership to post a total of 400 runs by the end of 50 overs.
