IPL 2021 To Have 8 Teams; New Franchises To Be Inducted From 2022: Reports

There is Annual General Meeting (AGM) of BCCI on 24 December in which this decision can be announced. The idea of including 2 new teams in IPL 2021 has been postponed which means a 10-team T20 tournament can see the light of day from the 15th edition of Indian Premier League.

At the end of the Indian Premier League 2020, there were speculations that 2 more new teams could be added for the next season. There were reports that 10 teams will be seen participating in IPL 2021. However, it does not seem to be happening now. According to reports, the BCCI has deferred the decision to include two new teams in IPL 2021. In IPL 14, only 8 teams will be seen playing in the cash-rich tournament.

Only 8 teams will play in IPL 2021

According to a report in Times of India, BCCI has decided to allow only 8 teams for IPL 20021. The idea of inducting 2 new teams has been postponed by the apex cricket board.

There is a Annual General Meeting (AGM) of BCCI on 24 December in which this decision can be announced. The idea of including 2 new teams in IPL 2021 has been postponed which means a 10-team T20 tournament can see the light of day from the 15th edition of Indian Premier League.

“The BCCI could call for the bids in February or March or April – whenever they think the time is right. The adding of new franchises, say stakeholders, will also add value to the 2021 edition once it becomes a talking point. That’s the line of thought as of now,” those tracking developments told Times of India.

According to a report published in Inside Sport, a BCCI official said, "Time is too short to launch two new teams in IPL 2021. Especially when there is also a new player auction. In this case, work is more and time is very less. If there are 2 new teams in the IPL, then it will be possible only in the 2022 season."

According to the Inside Sport report, BCCI's contract with Star Sports expires in 2021, which is why the IPL with new teams can be organized in 2022 itself. Because if a season will be played with 10 teams then its value will increase more. 10 teams means a tournament of 94 matches in total, so this is not possible in the current situation.

According to reports, Adani Group and Sanjeev Goenka want to buy the 9th team of IPL. Adani has already expressed his intention to buy an IPL team. After playing an important role in the making of World's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, Adani's desire to get involved in the sport seems to be intensifying. On the other hand, Sanjeev Goenka, who has also been the owner of Rising Pune Supergiant in the past, will also think about buying the new team's tender as soon as it opens.
