‘Indian Team Is A Champion Side’: VVS Laxman Believes In Kohli, Says ‘He Will Get Back To Scoring Hundreds’

Virat Kohli’s 2020 was unusual as he did not score a single hundred in the entire calendar year. But VVS Laxman believes the Indian captain would be back to his best soon. See what exactly Laxman said

Virat Kohli has been out of form in the recent past, the Covid-19 affected 2020 wasn’t a particularly good year for him. Many speculations are made about Kohli’s captaincy. It’s perhaps the first time that eye-brows are raised at Kohli’s performance. 2020 was the first year since Virat’s debut in 2008 that he had failed to score a single century. But ex-Indian cricketer VVS Laxman thinks that Kohli will bounce back and start scoring 100’s again.

2020 is in the past now and we all have to look ahead. India is playing England in a four match Test series followed by a five-match T20 and three-match ODI series. Apart from that, India’s chances at playing the World Test Championship are also looking bright, which is scheduled to be played in June 2021. VVS Laxman was speaking with Sports Today where he said: "Make no mistake, Virat will be eagerly waiting to contribute to the side again. He will be wearing that India cap with a lot of pride. It really amazes me as to how day in and day out, he still continues to play the game with so much intensity. Not even once I have seen Kohli take it easy when he is on a cricket field."

Laxman was solidly in defense of Kohli against the recent criticism that he faced. He said that Kohli is striving for excellence and thus ‘he will get back to scoring back hundreds’. Recently, there were talks about replacing Kohli as the captain of the Indian side to which Laxman said that: “India have so many leaders, who could stand up in Kohli's absence, which only means wonderful things for Indian cricket.” Yet again, he was in staunch defense of Kohli saying that the Indian skipper would have been the happiest looking at the performance by India.

Laxman then went on to talk about the talent, leadership and companionship which exists in the Indian team. He said that the current Indian side is very strong. "Also, I always feel good teams have leaders. While one will be designated captain, good teams will have a core group of leaders. Virat will be very happy that he has leaders in the form of Ajinkya, Ashwin, Pujara, Rohit and that's what you want in a champion side. And this Indian team is a champion side," Laxman said.

India is going to play England in a four match Test series beginning from February 5.
