Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, was absent from the field at the beginning of the third day of the ongoing fifth India vs England Test in Dharamsala due to a stiff back. Taking charge in his absence was Jasprit Bumrah, the designated vice-captain, who led the team. India appear to be on course for their fourth consecutive Test victory after losing the first IND vs ENG Test in Hyderabad.
"Captain Rohit Sharma has not taken the field on Day 3 due to a stiff back," the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in an official update on March 9 (Saturday).
The BCCI has not disclosed specific details regarding the severity of Rohit's injury or the anticipated time frame for his return to the field, if he does return at all.
Rohit-Gill Partnership Proved Crucial For India
Rohit showcased his batting prowess on Day 2 of the 5th IND vs ENG Test, crafting a brilliant century – his second of the series and 12th overall. He played a pivotal role in two substantial partnerships, the first being a 104-run stand with opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal (57). The second partnership was even more significant, as Rohit and Shubman Gill combined for a commanding 171-run stand for the second wicket. This partnership played a crucial role in putting England on the back foot and nearly batting them out of contention in the ongoing contest.
James Anderson Etches His Name In History
On the early morning of Day 3, James Anderson marked a historic milestone by securing his 700th Test wicket as England successfully bowled out India for 477. The hosts now hold a commanding lead of 259 runs in the ongoing fifth IND vs ENG Test on Saturday. Anderson achieved this feat by dismissing Kuldeep Yadav, who was caught behind after contributing 30 runs. In reaching 700 wickets, Anderson becomes the first pacer and the third bowler overall to achieve this remarkable milestone, joining the ranks of spinners Muttiah Muralitharan (800 wickets) from Sri Lanka and the late Australian legend Shane Warne (708).
