ICC Moves Women's T20 World Cup 2024 Out From Bangladesh Amid Political Turmoil

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to move the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 out from Bangladesh amid country's political turmoil and nationwide protests.

The 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup has been relocated from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed on August 20. The ICC board made this decision due to travel advisories from several participating countries and ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh caused by countrywide protests. While Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe also expressed interest in hosting, the UAE was ultimately chosen. The event is set to take place from October 3 to October 20 later in the year.

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice expressed regret over moving the Women’s T20 World Cup from Bangladesh, acknowledging that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have hosted a memorable event.

“It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event,” ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said.

Bangladesh To Retain Hosting Rights, Will Host An ICC Global Event In Near Future

Allardice thanked the BCB for their efforts to host the event in Bangladesh, but noted that travel advisories made it unfeasible. He confirmed that Bangladesh will retain hosting rights for a future ICC global event.

“I would like to thank the team at the BCB for exploring all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn’t feasible. However, they will retain hosting rights. We look forward to taking an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future,” Allardice noted.

“I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026,” Allardice expressed further thanking Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe expressing interest in hosting the Women's T20 World Cup.
