Global T20 Canada: Winnipeg Hawks Beat Vancouver Knights In Thrilling Super Over To Win Finals
Winnipeg Hawks emerged as champions in the first season of the Global T20 tournament in Canada after edged Vancouver Knights in a thrilling Super Over encounter
Winnipeg Hawks edged Vancouver Knights in a thrilling Super Over encounter to emerge as champions in the inaugural season of the Global T20 tournament in Brampton, Ontario (Canada) on Sunday.
Set a daunting 193-run target by the Winnipeg Hawks for victory in the summit clash, Vancouver ended up leveling the score on the back of a 36-ball 64 run innings by captain Shoaib Malik and Andre Russell's brutal 46 not out off 20 balls in 20 overs with 4 wickets in hand.
Vancouver Knights then batted first in the Super Over and managed 9 runs for 2 wickets with Russell scoring 7 runs.
Winnipeg in reply chased it down easily with 2 balls to spare as Chris Lynn smashed 5 runs while Russell, who bowled the Super Over for Vancouver, also conceded 4 runs in byes.
"I am just overwhelmed. We were off to a tremendous start. The pitch was getting slower and lower. We should have got to 200, but 192 was par. We were trying to make him wait (Russell) as long as possible. We held our nerves well. Sana, excellent last over and excellent Super Over.
"Sana said he wanted, I had no problem. Happy that he put his hand up and delivered. Nobody backed us to win the final, we believed we could do that. The close wins gave us the extra motivation. It's an excellent tournament, it'll go from strength to strength," Winnipeg captain Rayad Emrit said at the post-match presentation.
Earlier, it was Shaiman Anwar's brilliant 90 off 45 balls which helped Winnipeg reach 192 for 8 after being put into bat. Chris Lynn (37) and JP Duminy (33) also made significant contributions for Winnipeg.
