Delhi Daredevils knock Mumbai Indians out of IPL 2018
Back in their element at the business end of the tournament, defending champions Mumbai Indians would look to fire on all cylinders against wooden spooners Delhi Daredevils in their bid to clinch a play-off berth in a must-win IPL encounter, here.
Defending champions Mumbai Indians’ IPL campaign came to an end following 11-run defeat to Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.
Mumbai all-rounder Ben Cutting late exploits (20-ball 37) took Mumbai Indians closer to victory but failed to guide the 3-time champions into the playoffs of the 11th edition of the cash-rich league.
Chasing a tricky 175, Mumbai Indians suffered an early jolt as Surya kumar Yadav returned back to pavilion in the very first over. Evin Lewis, on the other hand, kept Delhi bowlers at the bay, scoring a gutsy 48 runs off 31 deliveries.
The middle order failed to perform in a must-win game with Ishan Kishan, Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard gifting wickets cheaply.
Hardik Pandya (27 off 17) showed some courage in the middle as he tried to stitch a partnership with injured Rohit Sharma as they added 43 runs but the soaring run-rate and Amit Mishra’s lovely spin got the better of him .
Nepalese leggie Sandeep Lamichhane (3/36), Amit Mishra (3/19) and medium pace of Patel (3/28) scalped three each while Kiwi pacer Trent Boult struck once to dismantle the high-confidence Mumbai team.
Earlier, having decided to bat first, the Delhi based outfit managed to put 174 on the board with Rishabh Pant smashing another half-century, taking his total to 684 in the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League.
The left-hander produced a mixture of text book and unorthodox shots in 44-ball innings in his home city. Pant laced up his innings with 4 maximums and as many boundaries.

Pant and Shankar kept Delhi the scoreboard ticking as they picked up the ones, the twos and the occasional boundaries. The duo completed a fifty-run fourth-wicket partnership off 37 balls as Delhi reached 120 for three in 15 overs.
After the departure the Pant, Shankar took the responsibility to guide the hosts to respectable 174/4 with an individual total of 43 runs.

Back in their element at the business end of the tournament, defending champions Mumbai Indians would look to fire on all cylinders against wooden spooners Delhi Daredevils in their bid to clinch a playoff berth in a must-win IPL encounter.
The equation could not have simpler for the defending champions. All they have to do is beat Daredevils to take the only spot available for the playoffs.
In the mid-table clutter, Mumbai Indians are among the two teams who are at 12 points and fighting for a spot in the play-offs.
Their job was however made a difficult by KKR, who won their last league fixture against Sunrisers to cement the the third spot. With the best NRR (+0.384), Mumbai would still make it to the top four if they manage to beat Daredevils.
If the result doesn’t go in Mumbai’s favour then Rajsthan already with 14 points and a better NRR than KXIP would qualify to the playoffs as the fourth team.
However, the performance in the past few matches is sure to have boosted the confidence of Rohit Sharma and his men.
Mumbai had a topsy-turvy campaign so far as after a series of defeats early in the tournament, they were able to string in the victories when it mattered most.
Daredevils though, can be the banana peel and Mumbai Indians will be wary after CSK slipped in their penultimate game. For DD, there is nothing but pride at stake, which makes the young team dangerous oppositions.
The last time the two teams faced off, it was DD won by seven wickets win in a last-over thriller.
Mumbai's batsmen have been inconsistent so far with skipper Rohit Sharma scoring only 273 runs in this edition so far.
It took a strokeful fifty from Kieron Pollard to help Mumbai post a competitive score against Punjab in their last match.
Suryakumar Yadav (500 runs) has been among runs after being promoted as opener while West Indian opener Evin Lewis (334) has had his moments on and off.
Skipper Rohit's poor form is a big worry for Mumbai. Apart from his match-winning knock against RCB, Rohit has failed to live up to the expectations of the fans and MI need him to contribute big time, so that Pollard and the Pandya brothers - Hardik and Krunal can provide the late charge if needed.
Jasprit Bumrah's (16 wickets) sensational three wicket haul in the last match will give him a lot of confidence apart from his consistent show in most death over situations.
Hardik (18 wickets and 233 runs) has been solid without being spectacular while Krunal (224 runs and 11 wickets) has again been impressive.
For Delhi, it has been another forgettable season as they looked below par throughout the tournament. Despite having legendary Ricky Ponting on board as coach or handing the captaincy in the middle of the tournament to young Shreyas Iyer, they have once again brought up the rear.
However, a break of five days seemed to fresh them as they outclassed formidable Chennai by 34 runs to restore some pride.
Vijay Shankar and Harshal Patel helped Daredevils post 162 for five and then leg-spinners Amit Mishra (2/20) and young Sandeep Lamichhane (1/21) managed to restrict CSK to 128 for six and Iyer would expect a similar effort from his team tomorrow.
