CPL 2020: St Lucia Zouks Skipper Daren Sammy Proudly Displays 'Black Lives Matter' Slogan On Back Of His Jersey
Sammy along with his fellow West Indian cricketers like Chris Gayle, Dwyane Bravo and many more international stars have been quite vocal about the Black Lives Matter campaign.
West Indian star all-rounder Darren Sammy who is leading the St Lucia Zouks in the ongoing edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2020) proudly displayed the 'Black Lives Matter' slogan on the back of franchise jersey during the CPL against Jamaica Tallawahs on Match Day 2 of the League.
Sammy along with his fellow West Indian cricketers like Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and many more leading international sports stars has been quite vocal about the Black Lives Matter campaign and even come out with some heart wrenching experiences of him facing racism in cricket during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.
The Black Lives Matter campaign which got triggered off after the brutal killing of African American citizen George Floyd by an American cop in Minneapolis on May 25 took an unprecedented global turn with millions of black citizens joining in the movement to extend and support the wide scale protests against racial discrimination rendered out ethnically black skinned citizens of African American stock around the world.
"Daren Sammy joins the ranks of athletes around the world who are using their platform in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign. In his very first match this season as the Captain of the St Lucia Zouks, Daren proudly displays the slogan on the back of his jersey to draw attention to a cause that has united athletes such as Louis Hamilton, LeBron James and Naomi Osaka, and who are using sport as a platform to influence popular opinion," St Lucia said in a team statement. We, as a society, need to start looking at all human beings equally," Sammy said. Sammy has been a leading figure among the cricket fraternity in lending voice to the movement against racial discrimination on the basis of colour and has even urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to raise awareness of the fight against racism, giving it the same level of attention and commitment as its anti-corruption drive. Sammy-led St Lucia Zouks did not have the best possible start to their CPL campaign as they were handed a five wickets defeat by Jamaica Tallawahs on Day 2 of the CPL.My new favorite playing jersey #BlackLivesMatter pic.twitter.com/U765p1nLf3
