BCCI AGM 2020: CAC Appoints Chetan Sharma As The New Chairman Of Selectors For Indian Cricket Team

BCCI AGM: The new five-member selection committee will start its work from team India's home series against England. Earlier in March, CAC had appointed Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh as national selectors.

The process of selecting the new Chief Selector of Team India has finally ended. The Madan Lal-led Cricket Advisory Committee has shortlisted the names of Chetan Sharma, Abey Kuruvilla and Debasish Mohanty to fill the three vacant positions in the five-member national selection panel. Former India fast-bowler Chetan Sharma, who played 65 ODIs and 23 Tests for team India, has been appointed as the new chairman of selectors.

The vacancies were created after terms of Sarandeep Singh, Devang Gandhi and Jatin Paranjape ended. The new selection committee will start its work from the home series against England. Earlier in March, CAC had appointed Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh as national selectors.

"The committee further recommended Mr Chetan Sharma for the role of Chairman of the senior men’s selection committee based on seniority (total number of Test matches). The CAC will review the candidates after a one-year period and make the recommendations to the BCCI. "The three new members will join Mr Sunil Joshi and Mr Harvinder Singh in the selection committee," the BCCI said in a statement. 54-year-old Chetan Sharma in his career took 61 wickets in Tests and 67 wickets in ODIs. Former fast bowler Abhay Kuruvilla took 25 wickets in 10 Tests and 25 wickets in 25 ODIs for national squad. Devashish Mohanty took 4 wickets in 2 Tests and an impressive 57 wickets in 45 ODIs for Indian cricket team.

A total of 11 players, including iconic India speedster Ajit Agarkar, had applied for the India selection panel. Ajit Agarkar, Abey Kuruvilla and Nayan Mongia had applied from the West Zone. Chetan Sharma, Maninder Singh, Vijay Dahiya, Ajay Ratra and Nikhil Chopra had filed nominations from North Zone. Shiv Sundar Das, Devashish Mohanty and Ranadev Bose applied from the East Zone. Only 5 of these 11 cricketers had been selected by the CAC to fill three vacant positions in the national selection committee. These reportedly included Agarkar, Chetan Sharma, Abey Kuruvilla, Nayan Mongia and Debasish Mohanty.

A three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) headed by Madan Lal – R. P. Singh and Sulakshana Naik being the other members - picked the national selectors ahead of the series against England scheduled in February.  CAC met virtually to select three members of the All-India Senior Selection Committee (Men).
