Afghanistan vs New Zealand In Greater Noida: When The Ill-Equipped Venue Faced A BCCI Ban

Afghanistan vs New Zealand In Greater Noida: The ill-equipped venue once faced a BCCI ban.

Afghanistan vs New Zealand In Greater Noida: While Greater Noida is set to become the 30th Test venue of India, it remains an ill-equipped venue when compared to some of the world class facilities that other stadiums offer. The drainage at this venue is not up to the highest standard and Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran has already twisted his ankle during a fielding drill a day before the one-off Test against New Zealand at the Greater Noida Sports complex on a wet outfield.

Afghanistan had planned two three-day games before the start of the Test match but rain and wet outfield means that they could only play one of those. New Zealand, on the other hand, could not even conduct a single training session with even the routine fielding drill cancelled after an inspection of the outfield.

"Our first choice was the Lucknow stadium and the second was Dehradun. Our requests were rejected by the BCCI and we were told that both the states are hosting their respective T20 leagues. This was the only ground available and we had no other choice left," an Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) official told The Indian Express.

“You won’t believe me but the stadia in Afghanistan have better facilities than this one. We have improved our infrastructure in the past few years but here as Shahidi has mentioned nothing has changed,” the official added.

When The Ill-Equipped Venue Faced A BCCI Ban

The venue which has no proper media stand and proper seating arrangement for fans either once faced a BCCI ban. As per a report carried by The Hindu, the anti-corruption unit of the BCCI was not pleased with the stadium being leased for the staging of a private league. The suspicious nature of the tournament was frowned upon by the Indian cricket board which banned it after which no BCCI matches were held at this venue.
