Maa Katyayani is the presiding deity worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri.
Shardiya Navratri 2024 Day 6: Today, on the sixth day of Navratri, devotees will worship Goddess Katyayani, the sixth divine form of Goddess Durga. Goddess Katyayani is revered as the goddess who grants quick and auspicious marriages and blesses devotees with their desired life partner. Her celestial domain is connected with the planet Jupiter (Guru Grah), symbolising wisdom and blessings.
Here's the details of the auspicious timing, rituals, and all about worshipping Goddess Katyayani:
Who Is Goddess Katyayani?
According to a popular mythological story, there was a revered sage named Kat, whose son was Rishi Katya. Rishi Katyayan, born into the lineage of this family, became world-renowned. When the demon Mahishasura's tyranny overwhelmed the Earth, Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva) collectively created a divine goddess to destroy him. Since this goddess was born in the ashram of Rishi Katyayan, she came to be known as Goddess Katyayani.
Colour For The Sixth Day Of Navratri:
Devotees are encouraged to wear red-coloured attire while worshipping Goddess Katyayani, as red symbolises love and enthusiasm. It is believed that wearing this colour during Navratri pleases the goddess and ensures her blessings are bestowed quickly.
Prayer Mantra Of Goddess Katyayani:
"Chandrahasojjvalakara Shardulavaravahana |
Katyayani Shubham Dadyad Devi Danavghatini ||"
This mantra praises Goddess Katyayani, who rides a tiger and shines with a radiant sword, symbolising her power to destroy demons and bestow auspiciousness upon her devotees.
Spiritual Connection With Braj
Maa Katyayani is regarded as the presiding deity of Braj. During the episode of Lord Krishna's childhood, when the gopis desired to have him as their husband, they worshipped Maa Katyayani. The worship of this goddess during their fast is also described in the Bhagavata Purana (10.22.1), with the following verse:
"In the first month of winter (Hemant), during the month of Margashirsha, the young maidens of Nanda’s village observed the vow of worshipping Katyayani, eating only simple food (Havishya)."
Thus, Goddess Katyayani holds a significant place in Hindu tradition, worshipped for strength, protection, and divine blessings.
