INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  • A blast outside a mosque in the city of Herat in Western Afghanistan on Friday killed a high-profile pro-Taliban cleric as well as civilians in what authorites said was an attack.

  • Indian-origin Laxman Narasimhan will be replacing Howard Schultz as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Coffee giant Starbucks, the company announced on Thursday. Laxman, who was formerly the CEO of Reckitt – makers of Durex condoms and Mucinex cold syrup, will join the company on October 1.
  •  India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are working on a joint initiative to establish health projects in Kenya and Tanzania and taking forward cooperation in food security within the I2U2 framework that includes the US and Israel.

  • The Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail to activist Teesta Setalvad in a matter related to allegedly fabricating documents to frame innocent people in 2002 Gujarat riots cases, ANI reported. The apex court directed Setalvad to render complete cooperation in the pending investigation and asked her to surrender her passport. The Supreme Court said the Gujarat High Court would decide Teesta Setalvad's regular bail plea independently and uninfluenced by any observations made by it. Setalvad is lodged in the Sabarmati central jail.
  • A mammoth shipbuilding effort that was on for the last 13 years at Cochin Shipyard, along with years of planning, designing and execution by the Indian Navy, attained a key milestone when India’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC-1) was commissioned as Indian Naval Ship (INS) Vikrant on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the commissioning ceremony which was held at the Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi on Friday morning where he also unveiled the new Naval Ensign or Nishaan.
  • Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar brushed aside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s accusation that opposition leaders were coming together to save the corrupt, saying no one was shielding the corrupt and that he didn’t really pay attention to what someone in the Centre said.
  • Pune-based pharmaceutical firm Serum Institute of India (SII) will soon launch CERVAVAC, India’s first indigenously developed Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus (qHPV) vaccine against cervical cancer. On Thursday, September 1, Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the SII, said at an event in Delhi that the qHPV vaccine will be available in the country in a few months. 
  • Giving a language ‘national’ status is a policy decision that requires amendment to the Constitution, and not ordered by the court, the Supreme Court said on Friday while dismissing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking Sanskrit to be declared as a national language.

Three days ago, he was admitted to a private hospital due to a lung infection and later shifted to a state-run hospital when his condition worsened.
  • Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones’ upcoming mystery drama movie Where the Crawdads Sing will release in India on September 16. Based on author Delia Owens’ 2018 novel of the same name, the movie will be released by Sony Pictures Entertainment India in the country, the studio said in a press release on Friday.

  • Former Mohun Bagan and East Bengal goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey has become the new All India Football Federation President after besting former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia 33-1 in polls decided by the 34-member voters’ list made up of state association representatives.
  • HS Prannoy went down fighting in the men’s singles quarterfinals against world championships bronze medallist Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei, bringing down the curtains on India’s campaign at the Japan Open here on Friday. The 30-year-old Indian played out of his skin and saved three match points, only to endure the agony of losing it in the end, as Chou emerged victorious 21-17 15-21 22-20 in a pulsating contest that lasted an hour and 20 minutes.
  • In a see-saw battle, Sri Lanka managed to scrape into the Super Fours with a sensational two-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the ongoing Asia Cup. In their must-win last Group B game, the Sri Lankans had broken one too many records. They held their nerves to record their second-highest successful run-chase in a T20I.
