England's Stuart Broad becomes youngest pacer to 400 Test wickets

England, batting first, were all out cheaply for 58 while the New Zealand placed themselves at a comfortable 175 for 3 at stumps on Day 1 courtesy a master class from captain Williamson (91*).

The right-arm quick, who started his 115th Test with 399 dismissals, had a chance early in the New Zealand innings to bring up the milestone when he found the edge of Jeet Raval's bat. However, the chance was put down by skipper Joe Root at slip.

The most successful England Test bowler is Broad's new-ball partner James Anderson with 523 from 134 matches.

Broad completed the milestone when he captured the wicket of Tom Latham on the opening day after they were bowled out for their sixth lowest Test total of 58.

In the gathering dusk in the first over after the dinner break, the 31-year-old Nottingham bowler had Latham caught at midwicket by Chris Woakes during the day-night Test. The England players rushed from all corners of the field to congratulate Broad for what was one of the few bright spots of their day.

Among all bowlers, only Muttiah Muralitharan and Harbhajan Singh have reached 400 at a younger age than Broad.

Broad, at 31 years and 271 days became the youngest fast bowler in the history of Test cricket to get to 400 Test wickets in Auckland.

The previous youngest was Dale Steyn at 32 years, 33 days, when he got to the milestone against Bangladesh in 2015.

Stuart Broad was the only source of light on the darkest day of English cricket in recent years in the first ever day/night Test match in New Zealand.
