Director and writer Sooraj Barjatya dedicated two years to crafting the film's script. Initially, he spent the first five months attempting to create another "Maine Pyar Kiya," but eventually decided to start from scratch. "Hum Aapke Hain Koun" (HAHK) was the first Hindi film to gross over INR 1 billion.

Aamir Khan was initially offered the role of Prem, but he declined it because he didn't find the script appealing. Salman Khan, who was experiencing a low point in his career, was then cast in the role. Madhuri Dixit was paid a salary of Rs. 27,540,000 for playing the role of Nisha, a fee higher than that of Salman Khan.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has cited the film as the one that changed his life, saying, "I realized Indian cinema is about values, tradition, subtlety, romance. There is so much soul in it."

Lata Mangeshkar, who sang more than 10 songs for the film, had long stopped accepting awards, but the immense popularity of "Didi Tera Devar Deewana" led her to receive the Filmfare Special Award that year.

The film was released with the new 'Ultra Stereo Optical Sound' for an enhanced audio-visual experience. The producers refused to allow theaters without the necessary systems to screen the film. Due to high demand after its release, many theaters upgraded their equipment to show the film. Consequently, ticket prices increased, attracting audiences who had shifted to television back to the theaters.

The musical interludes in the song "Joote Do Paise Lo" are instrumentals from "Kabootar Ja Ja" and "Aja Sham Hone Aayi," both of which are songs from Sooraj Barjatya's previous film, "Maine Pyar Kiya."

Adjusted for inflation, this film is one of the highest-grossing Bollywood movies of all time, with collections totaling up to 134 crore, which today would be approximately 700 crore. According to a recent report in Livemint, "Hum Aapke Hain Koun" (HAHK) is the most successful Hindi film ever on Indian television.
