Seems PM's ‘Taken Vow Of Total Silence On Manipur’: Cong Attacks Modi After His Call On Delhi Floods

The Congress has been demanding that PM Modi give a direct response on the Manipur situation since ethnic violence gripped the state on May 3.

The Congress on Friday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on Manipur remarking that it seems he has taken a "vow of total silence" on the violence in the northeastern state. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh cited Prime Minister's concern over the flood situation in Delhi while emphasising that he should also show interest in Manipur. The Congress has been demanding that PM Modi give a direct response on the Manipur situation since ethnic violence gripped the state on May 3.

"Prime Minister dialled Home Minister from Paris to inquire about the flood situation in New Delhi. It is good that he showed such concern. Why was no such call made when he was away in the US and Manipur was burning," Jairam Ramed asked on Twitter.

"Manipur is still burning while the Prime Minister is in France. But looks like he's taken a vow of total and complete silence on Manipur," he alleged.

The remark was in reference to PM Modi calling Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena from France to find out about the flood and waterlogging situation in the national capital.

"Honourable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji called from France to enquire about the waterlogging and flood situation in Delhi and the efforts being made to deal with it," Saxena said in a tweet in Hindi.

The Lt Governor said the Prime Minister "directed that appropriate steps be taken in the interest of Delhi by taking all possible help from the central government".

As per news agency ANI, PM Narendra Modi also spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the flood-like situation in parts of Delhi because of the rising water level of the Yamuna River. Shah briefed him that the water level is likely to recede in the next 24 hours and is keeping a close watch on the situation along with the LG Delhi, ANI reported Home Minister's Office (HMO) as stating.

MEA Slams EU Parliament's Discussion, Urgency Resolution On Manipur Crisis

With regards to Manipur, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday criticised European Parliament's discussion on developments in Manipur and its resolution as "interference in India's internal affairs" which is "unacceptable".

The response came after a resolution on the Manipur situation was adopted in the Brussels-based European Union (EU) Parliament containing serious claims about what caused the clashes in the strife-torn state. In a statement pertaining to the discussion, the EU Parliament mentioned that the clashes since May 2023 have left "at least 120 people dead, 50 000 displaced and over 1 700 houses and 250 churches destroyed."

The resolution went on to claim that "intolerance towards minority communities has contributed to the current violence and that there have been concerns about politically motivated, divisive policies that promote Hindu majoritarianism in the area."

Presenting India's response, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated: "We have seen that the European Parliament held a discussion on developments in Manipur and adopted a so-called urgency resolution. Such interference in India's internal affairs is unacceptable and reflects a colonial mindset."

The response added that Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, "are seized of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order."
