Assam Pugilists Shine At SAI, BFI-Organised Talent Hunt Program In Guwahati

At the ‘Eastern Open Talent Hunt Programme’ in Guwahati, Assam’s boxing contingent showcased their mettle, dominating several weight categories.

Guwahati: After a promising performance by the junior pugilists of Assam at the ongoing ‘Eastern Open Talent Hunt Programme’ in Guwahati, the Youth and Elite (men and women) group pugilists from the state displayed their prowess in the boxing ring in the city’s Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan (DTRP) indoor stadium on Sunday.

Amidst the fervour of the competition, Assam’s boxing contingent showcased their mettle, dominating several weight categories, and solidifying their presence in the penultimate stage of the tournament. While the semifinal bouts of the Youth and Elite groups of the open championships were played on Sunday, the final bouts are scheduled for Monday, as per a press release.

In the Elite Men’s event, Assam’s Gourav Muzumdar demonstrated his finesse by outclassing Haryana’s Siddhart Malik in the 48-51kg weight category. On the other hand, Assam’s Abhinab Saikia showcased his prowess as he triumphed over Haryana’s Aman Indora in the 63.5-67 kg category. The Elite Women’s event saw a spectacular performance by Assam’s Manju Basumatary as she emerged victorious against her fellow state mate Aroti in the 54-57 kg weight category, it said.

Among the Youth Girl’s event, Assam’s Ela Jyoti Pegu displayed her skill by defeating Manipur’s Ayekpam Ajita Chanu in the 46-48kg category, while Prantika Gogoi triumphed over Horipriya Patgiri, both from Assam, in the same weight category. Assam’s Rimpi Pegu secured her semifinal berth by beating Nikuoni Boro, also from Assam, in the 48-50 kg category. In the Youth Boy’s event, Assam’s Ohidur Rahman showcased his talent by besting Haryana’s Sagar in the 48-51 kg category. Junaid Anand displayed his prowess as he overcame Indra Veer of Madhya Pradesh in the 60-63.5kg category. Nirban Jyoti Gogoi sealed his semifinal berth by defeating Ganga Rabha, both representing Assam, in the 75-80kg category, it added.

Over 1,000 pugilists from across 28 states of India are participating in the open championships organised by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Boxing Federation of India (BFI). The tournament serves as a platform for the participants to exhibit their prowess and potentially earn invitations to join the trials for inclusion in the BFI’s national camps, the release further said.
