Assam To Encourage People For Organ Donation, Recognise Families Of Donors: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state government will recognise organ donor families and promote organ donation for patients in irreversible medical states.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that the state government will recognise families of organ donors in public forums and encourage people to organ donation if the patient is in an irreversible medical state.

"Govt of Assam will begin to recognise families of organ donors in public forums and encourage people for organ donation if the patient is in an irreversible medical state," Assam CM said during a press conference, PTI reported.

The Assam CM made the announcement as a state-run hospital in Guwahati conducted the first-ever successful cadaveric kidney transplant in the Northeast on Saturday.

Biswa said that the two kidneys from a brain-dead accident victim were transplanted to two persons recently at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), with both the receivers making good recovery.

The CM expressed regret that in various cases, families asked for "something in return" when approached for organ donation. He praised the noble decision of Gogoi's family for their generous act.

He outlined that in other states, particularly in southern India, liver and kidney donations are common, with hospitals maintaining a list of potential recipients. Sarma emphasised that promoting organ donation could help in preventing illegal organ trafficking.

Highlighting the major success in IVF treatment, Himanta said, " The Gauhati Medical College & Hospital has achieved major success in IVF treatment in recent times. The hospital has been able to conduct 36 embryo transplantation, 8 women are now pregnant and 1 child is born from this procedure in the hospital."
Another critical bone marrow transplant procedure is currently underway at GMCH. The hospital has already completed 28 cases, with three more patients currently undergoing treatment, he stated.

During the press briefing, Sarma also announced to implement the quality control measures for top-notch care at premier hospitals. This comes intending to guarantee government assistance through Ayushman Bharat and Ayushman Asom that could benefit the rightful beneficiaries.
