A powerful earthquake struck Turkey on Thursday evening, with tremors measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale. The quake has reportedly struck Konya province in Turkey’s Central Anatolia region. No casualty has been reported yet due to the earthquake.
In April, a 5.2 magnitude quake shook Istanbul and other parts of Turkey, prompting widespread panic and scores of injuries in the city of 16 million people. There were no reports of serious damage.
According to news agency AP, at least 236 people were treated for injuries they suffered while trying to jump from buildings or for panic attacks — most of them in Istanbul. It is considered at high risk for a major quake.
The quake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (about 6 miles), reported United States Geological Survey, with its epicenter about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Istanbul, in the Sea of Marmara.
Why Turkey Is Prone To Earthquakes
Turkey is located on several active seismic fault lines, which makes it highly susceptible to earthquakes. In recent years, Turkey has witnessed several destructive earthquakes, including the catastrophic 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes, which caused significant loss of life and property.
It is advisable to stay away from damaged buildings in the aftermath of an earthquake. People are advised to avoid using elevators immediately after an earthquake. The instructions from local authorities must be followed.
