After the first couple of couple of rounds of firing, a confused Trump grabbed his right ear with his right hand, then brought his hand down to look at it before dropping to his knees behind the podium to take cover. Secret Service agents promptly swarmed and covered the former president, as a visibly confused and scared crowd behind them also ducked to dodge any bullet.
Trump emerged about a minute later, with his red "Make America Great Again" hat knocked off. He could be seen mouthing "wait, wait," before agents ushered him into a waiting vehicle.

As per media reports, The identity of the shooter and their motive was not immediately clear.
"President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow," his spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement.
Later, Donald Trump said he was "shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear".
"I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin...Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening" the former president posted on his Truth Social account.
Notably, the shooting occurred less than four months before the November 5 election, when Trump is set to face an electoral rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden. Leading Republicans and Democrats quickly condemned the violence.
