New Delhi: The Google Doodle today is remembering Michael Dertouzos, a veteran computer scientist who predicted the impact of computer internet in daily lives. Michael Leonidas Dertouzos was a Greek professor in the departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also served as the director of MIT Laboratory for Computer Science from 1974 to 2001. During Dertouzos's term, the laboratory innovated in a variety of areas, including RSA encryption, the spreadsheet, the NuBus, the X Window System, and the Internet. In the doodle, Dertouzos can be seen with a chalk in his hand and a blackboard in the backdrop. There are several other pictures in the collage that depict computer and internet. Dertouzos has famously quoted: “We made a big mistake 300 years ago when we separated technology and humanism.. It's time to put the two back together”. In 1968, he co-founded Computek, Inc., a manufacturer of graphics and intelligent terminals with Marvin C. Lewis and Dr. Huber Graham. Born on November 5 in the year 1936, Dertouzos was also a concert pianist and an admiral in the Greek Navy. He passed away on August 27 in the year 2001. He was buried at the First Cemetery of Athens.
