Who Is Amit Gupta, Indian Techie Detained In Qatar For 'Data Theft'

Indian national Amit Gupta, Tech Mahindra’s country head in Qatar, has been detained since January 1 over alleged data theft, family calls for PMO intervention.

Indian national, Amit Gupta, who works in Qatar as Tech Mahindra's country head has allegedly been in a detention centre for over two months over alleged data theft, according to an IANS report. Gupta who hails from Gujarat's Vadodara, is a senior employee and has been working from the company for over 10 years.

His mother, Pushpa Gupta, said that Amit was detained by Qatari authorities on January 1. While his father claimed that the detention was carried out by Qatar's state security. Gupta’s family maintains his innocence, claiming he has been falsely accused of data theft. They are calling for his immediate release and have sought the intervention of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Gupta's mother stated that she travelled to Qatar and met with the Indian ambassador. According to her, the envoy mentioned that there had been no "positive response" so far regarding Gupta's case.

While speaking to IANS Pushpa Gupta said, "Amit Gupta was taken away on January 1 and held for 48 hours without food or water. After that, he was locked in a room, and it has now been three months. The reason for his detention is still unknown..."

The Indian embassy in Qatar has said they are aware of Gupta's detention by Qatari authorities, in connection with an ongoing investigation. The embassy has been in regular contact with Gupta's family, his lawyer, and Qatari authorities regarding the matter.

Who is Amit Gupta?

  • According to his LinkedIn profile, Amit Gupta completed his schooling at St. Paul's Boarding & Day School in Kolkata and Don Bosco High School. He pursued a B.Tech in Computer Science from Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, and later obtained an MBA from the International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi.
  • In college, he was the editor of the literary magazine 'Abhivyanjana'.
  • Gupta began his career in 2002 at Emaginative Technologies, Baroda, where he worked as a Business Associate for a year. He later joined Newgen, working in the banking vertical. In 2007, he started at Infosys as an Assistant Manager.
  • In 2010, Gupta joined Nucleus Software Exports as a Business Development Manager and he was promoted to Senior Client Manager at Nucleus Software Exports, in 2012. He also briefly worked as a Visiting Faculty at Alliance Business School, Bengaluru, in 2010, teaching marketing subjects.
  • In 2013, Amit Gupta relocated to Doha, Qatar, and joined Tech Mahindra. He was promoted to Senior Sales Manager in 2016 and, in April 2022, assumed the role of Region Head for Qatar and Kuwait at the company.

Tech Mahindra issued a statement on Sunday, in which they said that they were in close contact with Gupta’s family and providing necessary support. They are also actively coordinating with the authorities and adhering to due process.
