Who Is Gopichand Thotakura?

Hailing from Vijayawada, the 30-year-old Thotakura has been deeply entrenched in the world of aviation since his youth, defying conventional norms to pursue his passion for flight. His extensive aviation expertise encompasses piloting various aircraft, including bush planes, aerobatic planes, seaplanes, gliders, and hot air balloons.

He has also served as an international medical jet pilot, showcasing his versatility and dedication to aviation.

“Gopi is a pilot and aviator who learned how to fly before he could drive. He’s co-founder of Preserve Life Corp, a global center for holistic wellness and applied health located near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport,” the official website of Blue Origin said, describing Thotakura.

Blue Origin's NS-25 Mission

Apart from Thotakura, the mission will feature former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight, selected by US President John F. Kennedy in 1961 as the country's first Black astronaut candidate.

The NS-25 mission not only represents a “significant leap in personal space travel but also heralds a new era of sustainability in space exploration”. In its statement, Blue Origin said, “Our focus on reusability and environmental consciousness underscores its dedication to minimising the ecological impact of space travel”.

"Each astronaut will carry a postcard to space on behalf of Blue Origin’s foundation, Club for the Future. This program gives students access to space on Blue Origin’s rockets, including an all-digital method to create and send postcards, which can be found here. The Club’s mission is to inspire and mobilize future generations to pursue careers in STEAM for the benefit of Earth," Blue Origin said.

"From an environmental standpoint, nearly 99% of New Shepard’s dry mass is reused, including the booster, capsule, engine, landing gear, and parachutes. New Shepard’s engine is fueled by highly efficient liquid oxygen and hydrogen," it said.
