The politicians also made a request to extend the nomination procedure until March 31 so that Zelenskyy could be nominated.

New Delhi: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could soon se himself nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 2022. According to news agency ANI, several current and former European politicians have approached the Norwegian Nobel Committee with request of nominating Zelenskyy.

"We therefore humbly call upon you, the Committee, to consider: Extending and thereby re-opening the nomination procedure for the Nobel Peace Prize until March 31, 2022 to allow for a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for President Zelensky and the people of Ukraine," the statement, dated March 11, said, as reported by ANI.

The politicians also made a request to extend the nomination procedure until March 31 so that Zelenskyy could be nominated.

According to news agency AFP, the Norwegian Nobel Institute has received 343 nominations so far for this year's peace prize, and expressed hope that the number could rise further. Out of the total nominations, 251 were of individuals and 92 of organisations.

The highest number of nominations, 376, were submitted in the year 2016.

The institute never makes any comments on nominations, however, sponsors can reveal names if they want. The five members of the Nobel Committee can also make their own proposals in this regard, reported AFP.

The last date for nominations was January 31 but requests have been made by politicians to extend the date till the end of March and add Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the list.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced from October 3-10 this year.
