Earthquake Of Magnitude 7 Jolts Indonesia, Philippines. No Casualty: Report

New Delhi: An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale hit eastern Indonesia and southern Philippines on Wednesday, news agency AP reported. According to the report, there has been no immediate damage and no tsunami warning has been issued yet.
As per the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicentre of the earthquake is 48 kilometre (30 miles) deep under the sea, centred 154 kilometre (94 miles) northwest of Tobelo.
The tremors were also felt in several provinces and cities across the southern Philippines, however, there was no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Some residents tried to escape from the houses in the Indonesian town of Tobelo in North Maluku province.

Pius Ohoiwutun, on of the residents, said some people ran from houses when the quake hit. “I felt a little swaying as the lamps also swayed,” AP quoted Ohoiwutun as saying.
However, no tsunami alert has been was issued by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.
It is to be noted that both the archipelago nations lie on the “Ring of Fire,” the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Basin, where most of the world’s earthquakes and volcanic eruptions take place.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 also jolted eastern Indonesia. However, no damage was reported.
A magnitude 5.6 earthquake killed at least 331 people in Indonesia’s West Java province on November 21. It was the deadliest earthquake in Indonesia since 2018.
In 2004, an extremely powerful Indian Ocean earthquake set off a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in Indonesia’s Aceh province.
