Cocaine Worth $17,820,000 Found In Bananas Donated To US Prison
In Texas, when police officers were unloading the boxes, one of the officers "discovered something not quite right."
TEXAS: In US, prison officials discovered almost $18 million worth of cocaine hidden in a shipment of bananas donated to a jail in Texas on Friday.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said that the 45 boxes of bananas from Ports of America in Freeport, Texas were donated to the Wayne Scott Unit, a prison about 32 miles north. The reason for its donation was that the fruit is already ripe.
When police officers were unloading the boxes, one of the officers "discovered something not quite right."
In a Facebook post, it was stated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice "They snipped the straps, pulled free the box, and opened it up. Inside, under a bundle of bananas, he found another bundle! Inside that? What appeared to be a white powdery substance."
Later, when the officers contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials who travelled to the prison to investigate the mysterious packages, they tested positive for cocaine.
The police was able to uncover 540 packages of cocaine within the shipment, with an estimated street value of $17,820,000.
