Bangladesh Violence: 45 Arrested After Hindu Houses Burnt Down In Rangpur, Compensation To Be Given For Property Loss

Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said 45 people with links to the violence in Rangpur have already been arrested and search is on for others.

Kolkata: As many as 45 people have been arrested so far in connection with the communal violence that broke out in Rangpur of Bangladesh. On Sunday, 20 Hindu households were burnt down by radical Islamists in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur district.

Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said on Monday 45 people with links to the violence in Rangpur have already been arrested and a search is on for the others.

“These people, we have spotted some of them. We have instantaneously arrested 45 people and we are still trying to identify more,” he said.

This was the fifth consecutive day of violence against the Hindus in Bangladesh, which has resulted into injury and even deaths of many along with damage to property on a large scale.

Khan, however, assured that under the directions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrangements have been made for compensation for the property loss, in the form of cash or reallocation.

“The Prime Minister has given directions for establishment of their houses. Tin, wood, cash money whatever is required, all that will be provided under the directions of our honourable Prime Minister,” Khan added.

Furthermore, the Bangladesh police have also arrested one Paritosh from Joypurhat on charges of posting offensive religious content on Facebook.

Khan has assured that justice will be served and no one will be spared, when found guilty. He assured that proper investigation is still going on and “exemplary” punishment will be given to those involved.

This series of violence against Hindus, who are in minority in Bangladesh, started after a supposed besmirching of the Quran at a Durga Puja pandal in  Cumilla district last week.
