Bangladesh General Election 2024: Russia's election monitoring group alleged that the United States-led West is attempting to influence the course and results of the elections in Bangladesh.

Dhaka: Russia's election monitoring group has claimed that the United States is involved in a conspiracy to affect the Bangladesh election results. Head of the Russian election monitoring delegation, Andrei Shutov, said that the current Bangladesh government is actively demonstrating a commitment to electoral transparency and aims to ensure the same to show that the elections are legitimate. Speaking to journalists after visiting several polling stations on Sunday, Shutov, who leads the first-ever delegation of election observers from the current composition of the Russian Central Election Commission in Bangladesh, expressed their intent to closely monitor the electoral proceedings.

Shutov told Russian media, "We will be actively monitoring polling stations and visit several of them in Dhaka to see how voting is going on".

"We will observe the activities of various political parties and voters, as well as the organization of the electoral process at each polling station. In other words, we will monitor all the parameters of the voting process," he stated.

The three-member Russian delegation arrived in Bangladesh specifically to monitor the general parliamentary elections, signifying the global interest in the outcome of these elections.

"These elections are of great interest. Currently, about 200 representatives of foreign countries have already been registered here," remarked Shutov, underlining the international attention the elections have garnered.

Despite the widespread interest, the main opposition party, BNP, opted to boycott the elections, demanding the resignation of the prime minister. Shutov, addressing the media on Saturday, alleged that several Western states, including the United States, are attempting to influence the course and results of the elections in Bangladesh.

"It is important for Bangladesh to ensure the implementation of the principle of the legitimacy of elections, especially given the attempts by some states, primarily from the West, led by the United States, to influence the election process, interfere in it, and affect the results - through non-profit organizations, through their proteges, with the help of considerable funding," cautioned Shutov during a telephone conversation with a TASS correspondent.

He further claimed that Bangladesh is not the only country where such activities are taking place, noting, "Since the country, which has declared itself a hegemon, the leader of the world order, is trying to influence the electoral processes around the world. And Bangladesh is not an exception here".
