National Safety Day 2021: This year marks the 49th celebration, and reiterates the vision of the National Safety Council in fostering a preventive culture and scientific mindset among people.

In an attempt to spread awareness around the need to ensure safety of people indoor and outdoor, National Safety Day is being observed on March 4 every year. The day usually marks the foundation of the National Safety Council, a body set up under aegis of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, which work towards raising awareness about safety measures that is crucial in preventing accidents and mishaps.

What’s the history?

The day was celebrated in 1972 to mark the foundation day of the autonomous body namely National Safety Council. It is a non-profit, self-financing and tripartite apex body at the national level. In 1965, the government for the first time organised a conference on Industrial Safety in the presence of the then President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. On this day, the need for Safety Councils on national and state levels was agreed upon.In 1966, the proposal for a National Safety Council was accepted in the 24th Session of the Standing Labour Committee. The Council has been set up on 4 March 1965 in order to raise awareness among people and bring them togather for a voluntary movement on Safety, Health, and Environment.

This year marks the 49th celebration, and reiterates the vision of the National Safety Council in fostering a preventive culture and scientific mindset among people.

It is widely observed across industries, departments, NGOs, and regulatory agencies in the country. There is a new theme for National Safety Day every year. This year's theme is ‘Sadak Suraksha (Road Safety).’

“It is our belief that these issues are a basic humanitarian concern. We equally believe that their effective address is greatly facilitated if their intrinsic relationship with quality and productivity is well demonstrated,” states the organisation’s vision

Initially started as a single-day celebration on 4 March, the celebration has now spread over a week from March 4-10.
