'State Govt Taking Strict Action, 2 Injured': MEA Responds After Foreign Students Attacked Over Namaz In Gujarat

Two students - one from Sri Lanka and another from Tajikistan - were hospitalised after the incident and an FIR was registered against 20-25 people.

The MEA said Gujarat government is taking strict against the perpetrators.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday said the Gujarat government is taking strict against the perpetrators who attacked international students in a Gujarat University hostel last night.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also said two foreign students were injured in the clash and added that one of them has been discharged from hospital after receiving medical attention.

"An incidence of violence took place at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad yesterday. State government is taking strict action against the perpetrators. Two foreign students were injured in the clash. One of them has been discharged from hospital after receiving medical attention. MEA is in touch with Gujarat government," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a tweet on Sunday. 

The MEA's response came after students hailing from different foreign countries were assaulted allegedly by a group of persons in the Gujarat University hostel in Ahmedabad for offering namaz in the facility's building, according to Gujarat police.

Two students - one from Sri Lanka and another from Tajikistan - were hospitalised after the incident and an FIR was registered against 20-25 people.

Police Commissioner GS Malik said nine teams of security personnel were formed to conduct a probe into the incident.  

The incident was reported at around 10.50 pm on Saturday when nearly two dozen people barged into the Gujarat University's hostel and raised an objection to students from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and other countries offering namaz in the facility where they stayed.  

There are around 300 international students enrolled at the Gujarat University, including from Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka and countries in Africa. Nearly 75 of the international students stay in the A-block hostel of the university where the incident occurred, as per an official.
