Kerala: Murder Convict Escaped From Prison To Meet His Family, Surrenders Before Court

The accused was sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder case registered by Thiruvananthapuram police and lodged in the central prison in 2017.

Chennai: A 48-year-old prisoner who escaped from the central prison at Poojappura in Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala surrendered before the Thiruvananthapuram Judicial first class magistrate court on Saturday. The prisoner had informed the court that he escaped from prison to meet his family back in Tamil Nadu. 

According to a report in the New Indian Express, the prisoner, Jahir Hussain, was a native of Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu. He appeared before the court along with his wife and son around 11:30 am and informed the magistrate that he wanted to surrender. The court in turn initiated the necessary proceedings and informed the Poojappura police officials to take further action. 

The report further said that the accused was shifted to a special cell in the central jail. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder case registered by Thiruvananthapuram police and lodged in the central prison in 2017.

Quoting police sources, the report said that the accused had escaped from the prison about ten days ago as he was desperate to see his family members in the Tirunelveli district. 

According to the report, Hussain escaped from the prison when he was assigned laundry duty on September 7 and he fled from the power laundry unit which was situated outside the prison wall, without being noticed by the prison officials. He was assigned on duty outside the prison as he was in prison officials’ good books. 

Even though the police officials had been searching for the accused at several places including at Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts, police could not trace him, police said, as per the report.   

Preliminary investigations revealed, according to the report, that the accused took an autorickshaw till Thycaud, walked towards central railway station at Thampanoor and took a train to reach Tamil Nadu.
