Calcutta HC Allows Suvendu Adhikari's Rally In Nazat, Asks To Avoid Remarks That Incite Violence
BJP's Suvendu Adhikari sought permission to hold the meeting at Sundarikhali village, but an alternative place was suggested by the court after the state opposed the plea
The Calcutta High Court has granted permission to the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, to hold a public meeting on March 10 at the Akratala area under the Nazat police station in North 24 Parganas district. The court directed that nothing should be said at the rally that may lead to the deterioration of the law and order situation in the locality, which is situated near Sandeshkhali, news agency PTI reported. Adhikari's counsel had initially sought permission to hold the meeting at Sandeshkhali village, but an alternative place was suggested by the court after the state opposed the plea. The court allowed Adhikari to hold the meeting at Akratala, following the suggestion of his lawyers.
The house of suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh is located in a village in the Nazat police station area. Sheikh is currently in CBI custody in connection with an attack on ED officials and is also accused in several cases of atrocities on women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.
After Adhikari's prayer, Justice Jay Sengupta permitted him to hold the public meeting between 10 am and 5 pm on March 10, according to PTI.
The participants have also been instructed not to use foul language and make comments that incite violence, news agency ANI reported.
Reacting to the order, Adhikari stated on X, "The blatant attempt by the failed State Administration to prevent me from holding a Public Meeting/Rally in and around Sandeshkhali area has been once again demolished by the Hon’ble Calcutta High Court. Today the Hon’ble Justice Jay Sengupta has allowed the Meeting/Rally at Mouja Aakratla, under Nazat Police Station on 10.03.2024, between 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. I welcome the solemn order of the Hon’ble Court."
