WB: 2 students dead during clashes in Dinajpur school over recruitment of Urdu teachers

The newly recruited three teachers were brought to school under police protection on Friday. Students clashed with police as the situation went out of control.

New Delhi: In a tragic incident, 2 students from Darivit High School in Islampur, North Dinajpur district in West Bengal lost their lives; whereas many students were left injured as clashes broke out between them and police over hiring of Urdu teachers. Several Police personnel’s were also injured in the ensuing clash. Three teachers were employed for Urdu subject three days back; whereas one for Sanskrit. After recruitment of teachers, some students were staging a protest demanding recruitment of teachers for other subjects as well. The newly recruited three teachers were brought to school under police protection on Friday. Students clashed with police as the situation went out of control. The protesting students turned so violent that they hurled bricks and stones at police; in return Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Following the incident, the BJP's district unit has called a 12 hour shutdown in Islampur area on Friday to protest against the killing and the "lawless situation" in North Dinajpur. The district TMC leadership accused the BJP of fomenting trouble in the area, an allegation rejected by the latter.
