Modi Cabinet Clears Vishwakarma Yojana. What Is It? Who Will Benefit From The Scheme?
Vishwakarma Scheme: Artisans and craftsmen from various sectors, such as metal, wood, textiles, clay, stone, leather, bamboo, paper, glass, and cane would be covered under the Vishwakarma Yojana.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a fresh initiative from the government called the 'Vishwakarma Yojana' during his address on India's 77th Independence Day. The initiative, which will be launched on the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja on September 17, aims to support the livelihoods of traditional artisans and craftsmen. The scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet, is set to receive an initial allocation of Rs 13,000 crore.
What Is The Vishwakarma Yojana?
- The Vishwakarma Yojana will encourage growth among professions such as goldsmiths, ironsmiths, washermen, hairdressers, hairdressers, and masons among others.
- Artisans and craftsmen from myriad sectors, such as metal, wood, textiles, clay, stone, leather, bamboo, paper, glass, and cane would be covered under this scheme.
- The scheme aims to improve the quality, scale, and reach of products and services available to artisans by exposing them to better and accessible raw material, tools, training on product development, etc.
- Under the scheme, the beneficiaries will be integrated with international and domestic value chains by providing marketing, packaging and branding assistance as well as access to markets.
- The beneficiaries of the Vishwakarma Yojana will encompass those engaged in traditional crafts requiring specialized skills.
- The Vishwakarma Scheme was formally announced in the 2023 Budget.
The Vishwakarma Yojana has been announced in the wake of many artisan families moving away from their professions and the arts due to a lack of funding, recognition, training, income, and a host of other challenges.
In his address to the nation, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the positive impacts of several other government initiatives. He emphasized that schemes like PM Svanidhi Yojana, Mudra Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana have collectively aided around 13.5 crore Indians in lifting themselves out of poverty.
PM Modi specifically praised the Mudra Yojana, which, with a substantial budget of over 20 lakh crore rupees, has enabled self-employment opportunities and business growth, helping millions transition to the new middle class. Prime Minister Modi also took the opportunity to highlight the positive outcomes of previous government schemes that have benefited the citizens. He noted that the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Yojana directly transferred an impressive amount of Rs 2.5 lakh crore to farmers' accounts across the nation.
