Unnao Incident: Akhilesh Yadav Sits On 'Dharna' Outside Vidhan Bhavan
Accompanied by senior party leaders, Yadav squatted before the main entrance of the Vidhan Sabha to protest the Unnao incident.
New Delhi: Samajwadi Party president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav sat on a 'dharna' outside the Vidhan Bhavan in Lucknow on Saturday, after the death of the Unnao rape victim in Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Accompanied by senior party leaders, Yadav squatted before the main entrance of the Vidhan Sabha to protest the Unnao incident. Speaking to the press, Yadav said, "This is an extremely condemnable incident. This is a black day. It is not the first such incident under this BJP Govt. CM had said in this very assembly, 'apradhiyon ko thok diya jayega', they could not save the life of a daughter."
Further demanding the resignation of the Yogi Adityanath government, taking moral responsibility for the Unnao incident in which a gang rape survivor was set ablaze by those accused of her rape, Yadav said, "Till the day Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, state Home Secretary and DGP don't resign, justice will not be done. Tomorrow we will conduct a shokh sabha in all districts of the state over Unnao rape case."

The Unnao rape victim was set on fire by five persons, including two rape accused, and suffered 90% burns on Thursday. She was airlifted to Delhi hospital where she breathed her last on Friday night.
Earlier, Akhilesh Yadav had also asked the judiciary to take suo moto cognizance of the incident and initiate action. "The government has lost the moral authority to remain in power," he had said.
The girl was set on fire by two of the rape accused, out on bail, along with their three associates. The two rape accused were released on bail just a day ago. The incident took place in Hindu Nagar village under Bihar police station of Unnao where the minor had been gang-raped in March. The rape survivor was on her way to the hearing in her court case when she was accosted by the accused. They took her to a secluded spot, poured kerosene and set her ablaze.
Seeing the girl go up in flames, panic stricken villagers informed the police who first took the rape survivor to the district hospital from where she was referred to the Trauma Centre of King Goerge Medical University in Lucknow.
Akhilesh Yadav said that Unnao had earlier witnessed the rape of a girl by the BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar who is now in jail.
