TMC leader Sovan Chatterjee resigns from Kolkata Mayor post, Firhad Hakim likely to be next Mayor

NEW DELHI: Sovon Chatterjee on Thursday resigned from the post of Kolkata Mayor after sending his resignation letter through a messenger to Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) chairperson Mala Roy. Roy, accepting the resignation letter, held a high-level meeting at her office Thursday. Earlier on Tuesday, he had resigned as West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services and Housing minister. According to reports, Bengal minister Firhad Hakim will be the next Mayor of Kolkata while Atin Ghosh who has been appointed as MIC of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation is likely to be the will next deputy Mayor. Earlier this year, Banerjee had removed Chatterjee from the post of the Environment Minister. The distance between Banerjee and Chatterjee, who was once considered a trusted aide of the chief minister, started growing after reports of problems in his conjugal life surfaced. News agency PTI reported that there were also allegations that Chatterjee was not taking his responsibilities seriously, either as a mayor or as a minister. (Additional input from agencies)
