The Thane Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Sunday apprehended the main accused, Ashwajit Gaikwad, along with his associates Romil Patil and Sagar Shedge in connection with a hit-and-run case in Thane. The incident, which took place on December 11, involved the accused allegedly attempting to mow down his girlfriend Priya Singh with a car.

As reported by news agency ANI, the Thane Police confirmed the arrests. The vehicle implicated in the crime has also been seized, the police informed.

Amarsingh Jadhav, Deputy Commissioner of Thane Police, told ANI, "Three accused have been arrested in connection with this case. The names of the accused are Ashwajit Gaikwad, Romil Patil, and Sagar Shedge. We have seized a four-wheeler vehicle. Further probe is underway."

Earlier in the day, Thane Police Commissioner Jai Jeet Singh informed that a case has been registered against Ashwajit Gaikwad and the two associates under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 279 (rash driving), news agency PTI reported.

Thane Runover Case: SIT Probe Into Case

The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 am near a hotel on Ghodbunder Road, where the 26-year-old woman had gone to meet Gaikwad. An argument ensued, and when Priya Singh retrieved her belongings from Gaikwad's car and attempted to leave, the driver allegedly tried to run her over. She fell and sustained serious injuries during the incident.

Following the episode, the victim shared details of the incident through various social media posts, prompting public attention and outrage.

"For a thorough investigation, an SIT has been formed under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 5 Amar Singh Jadhav, and it is probing into all angles of the case," stated an official, quoted by PTI. The SIT is actively recording statements from witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. Additional sections of the law may be invoked as the investigation progresses and more facts emerge, as per PTI's report.
