Sharad Pawar on Tuesday announced his retirement and said he has decided to step down as Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president. “I have decided to stop working as the president of the NCP. I will continue working in the political, social and cultural life henceforth,” he said.
At an event for the publication of his book in Mumbai, Pawar said that he has decided to take retirement from the post of National President of the Nationalist Congress Party.
As soon as Pawar announced his decision, the NCP supporters in the auditorium started protesting against the decision. They raised slogans hailing the veteran leader and appealed to him to take back his decision.

While announcing his retirement, Sharad Pawar said that a four-member committee will take a decision on the next chief of the party. The members of the committee are Praful Patel, Dilip Walse, Narhari Sitaram Zirwal and Anil Deshmukh. Meanwhile, his nephew Ajit Pawar said that he would abide by the decision of the NCP committee on his resignation.
Reacting to the development, Shiv Sena (UBT) Sanjay Raut tweeted in Marathi which when loosely translated read, "There was a time when Shiv Sena Chief Balasaheb Thackeray also resigned from the post of Shiv Sena Chief due to dirty allegations. Balasaheb had to withdraw his resignation due to public outrage. Sharad Pawar is the soul of the country's politics and social causes."
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Nana Patole said that he doesn't know anything about Sharad Pawar's resignation and what is happening inside his party. While talking to ABP News, he said it is a big loss for the NCP but the Maha Vikas Aghadi in the state has no problem with it.
Talking to the media, he said, "We thought Sharad Pawar will remain in public life till his last breath but we can't tell why he resigned today. It will not impact Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). We hope that the new president of NCP will stay with MVA."
NCP's Praful Patel says that Sharad Pawar did not take anyone into confidence before announcing his resignation, reported PTI.

A day after Sharad Pawar announced his decision to step down as the NCP president, senior party leader Praful Patel said he was not interested in the post. "I am not ready to take on the responsibility of the presidency. I am not interested in the post of president," Patel said.
