New Delhi: In the latest development to the controversial video of an assault on an elderly man, the Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to former Twitter India head Manish Maheshwari over a plea by the Uttar Pradesh Police asking him to appear for questioning.

The case pertains to the video in which an elderly Muslim man was allegedly attacked by some young men who “forced” him to chant “Jai Shri Ram”.

The case was being heard by a Bench led by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana. UP Police had approached the apex court after the Karnataka High Court set aside a notice sent to Maheshwari which asked him to appear at a police station in Ghaziabad.

Earlier this year on June 17, the Ghaziabad Police had sent a notice on Maheshwari, who is residing in Bangalore to report at its Loni Border police station within seven days for recording the statement in the case.

After receiving the notice, the MD showed a willingness to join the investigation through video conference for the time period and assured cooperation with the police provided they agreed to guarantee in writing that he would not be arrested. The Ghaziabad Police had issued fresh summons to Twitter India on June 21.

The Uttar Pradesh Police informed the court that it only wanted to question Maheshwari and did not intend to arrest him.

It is when Maheshwari approached the Karnataka High Court questioning the legal standing of this notice. In the June 25th order, the court had then restrained the Ghaziabad Police from initiating any coercive action against him. The court had also maintained that the police could examine Maheshwari through virtual mode.
