A special MP MLA court in Rampur on Thursday sentenced Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan to 10 years of imprisonment and slapped 14 Lakhs fine in Dungarpur Basti demolition, loot and theft case.

District government advocate MP/MLA court, Seema Singh Rana told ANI that Azam Khan was convicted in a matter yesterday and the quantum of sentence was pronounced today.

"He has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. He has also been penalised with a total amount of Rs 14 Lakhs. The matter pertained to Dungarpur Basti, where complainant Abrar had lodged a case against Khan for forcibly entering into his house in 2019. He had also alleged loot and theft along with threats. His house was demolished using a bulldozer." Rana told ANI.

The second accused Barkat Ali has been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment with a total of Rs 6 Lakhs fine.

On Wednesday, Rampur court convicted Azam Khan in the case registered in 2019 at Ganj police station in Rampur under sections 392, 452, 504, 506 and 120 B. The court has also convicted the co-accused contractor Barkat Ali in this case under sections 392, 452, 504 and 506.

The Dungarpur case against Khan dates back to the Samaj Wadi party's regime in Uttar Ptadesh when houses under the Aasra Awas Yojana were built in Dungarpur near the Rampur Police Line.

Some people already had houses built there, which were demolished in 2016 by claiming that they were on government land. In 2019, when the BJP government came to power in the state, 12 cases were registered in Ganj Kotwali of Rampur.

On March 18, Khan was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment in a similar case that was registered on the complaint of Jail Road resident Ehtesham to seven years imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh. Former CO City Ale Hasan Khan, former municipal president Azhar Khan and Bareilly contractor Barkat Ali were also sentenced to five years with a fine of Rs 2 lakh each.

Apart from this, a verdict in a case of Dungarpur case against SP leader Azam Khan was also delivered on January 31, 2024.

That case was filed by Ruby wife Karamat Ali. In this case, after the completion of the hearing, the court acquitted all the accused including Azam Khan.

Total of 84 cases were registered against Azam Khan in the year 2019, most of them are pending in the court.

Azam Khan is lodged in Sitapur jail and his son Abdullah Azamis lodged in Hardoi jail. Whereas, Azam Khan's wife former MP Dr. Tajin Fatma who is lodged in Rampur jail has got bail from the High Court and the way for her release has been cleared. She is expected to come out of jail today.
