PFI's Official Twitter Account Withheld In India, Student Wing To Challenge Ban In Court

The Popular Front of India's official Twitter account has been withheld after the Centre banned the Islamic outfit for five years under the stringent anti-terror law UAPA.

New Delhi: Popular Front of India's (PFI) official Twitter account has been withheld in India "in response to a legal demand". This comes after the Union government declared PFI and its associates, affiliates, or fronts as an unlawful association for 5 years.

Meanwhile, the PFI-affiliated Campus Front of India on Thursday called the ban on them undemocratic and anti-constitutional and said it will be challenged in court.

"CFI will be stopping all activities of the organisation in India with immediate effect... all allegations will be challenged in court," CFI wrote in a tweet.

The Popular Front of India has been banned for five years under the stringent anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The Centre accused the Islamic outfit of having "links" with global terror groups such as the ISIS and trying to spread communal hatred in the country.

The PFI's eight associates that were also placed on the list of the organisations outlawed under the UAPA include Rehab India Foundation, Campus Front of India, All India Imams Council, National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation, National Women's Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation and Rehab Foundation, Kerala.

The ban on alleged terror activities comes after the National Investigating Agency (NIA), the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and various state police forces carried out raids in a massive pan-India crackdown on the PFI twice in recent days.

According to news agency PTI, a total of 106 leaders and activists of the PFI were arrested in 15 states on September 22 for allegedly supporting terror activities in the country. On September 27, more than 170 people allegedly linked with the PFI were detained or arrested in raids across seven states.
