Govt Should Practise In India What It Preaches To World: Chidambaram Taunts PM Modi’s G7 Address

“PM Modi’s speech at the G7 Outreach meeting is inspiring as well as ironic. The Modi government should practise in India what it preaches to the world. It is sad that PM Modi was the only Guest not physically present at the Outreach meeting. Ask yourself why?” Chidambaram tweeted.

New Delhi: Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his speech made at the G7 Summit where he laid thrust on “democracy and freedom”, former union minister and Congress veteran P. Chidambaram on Monday alleged the “government should practise in India what it preaches to the world”.

The Congress leader said Prime Minister Modi’s “speech at the G7 Outreach meeting is inspiring as well as ironic”.

“Because India is an outlier as far as the fight against Covid 19 is concerned. We are the most infected and least vaccinated country (as a proportion of the population),” he said in another tweet.

The remarks came a day after Prime Minister Modi in his address on the second day of the Outreach Sessions of the G7 Summit “recalled that democracy and freedom were a part of India’s civilizations ethos”.

The Prime Minister, who was invited to speak as a lead speaker in the session on Open Societies, shared the concern expressed by several leaders that open societies are particularly vulnerable to disinformation and cyber-attacks.

Prime Minister Modi stressed the need to ensure that cyberspace remains an avenue for advancing democratic values and not of subverting it.

He called for the reform of the multilateral system as the best signal of commitment to the cause of Open Societies while highlighting the non-democratic and unequal nature of global governance institutions.
