Nikhat Zareen, Manisha Moun and Parveen Hooda won medals in the recently concluded World Boxing Championships.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met women boxers Nikhat Zareen, Manisha Moun and Parveen Hooda, who won medals in the recently concluded World Boxing Championships. PM Modi interacted with the boxers and even took selfies with them. India won a gold and two bronze medals at the event.
Nikhat Zareen won the gold medal at the World Women Boxing Championship after beating Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand in the 52kg final of the championship in Istanbul.
With the feat, Nikhat joined six-time champion MC Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL and Lekha C to become the fifth Indian woman boxer to win the world title. This was India's first gold medal in four years. Mary Kom (48kg) won the last title in 2018.
Manisha Moun and debutant Parveen Hooda won the bronze medals in the 57kg and 63kg respectively.
India's best performance in the World Women Boxing Championship remains the one in 2006 when the country snared eight medals, including four gold, one silver and three bronze. India now has won 39 medals, including 10 golds, eight silver and 21 bronze in the Women's World Championships.

Earlier in the day, the Telangana government announced a cash prize of Rs 2 crore each to boxer Nikhat Zareen and Esha Singh, who won the gold medal in the ISSF Junior World Cup Shooting event in Germany.
An official release said Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao decided to allot residential plots to the two sportspersons at Banjara Hills or Jubilee Hills in the city.
