Pilgrimage To Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Through Kartarpur Corridor To Resume Tomorrow: Gurdaspur DC

The Kartarpur corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district.

Pilgrimage to the historic Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan through the Kartarpur corridor will resume on Tuesday after it was suspended because of rains. Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Himanshu Aggarwal, who visited the Kartarpur Corridor on Monday, informed that the pilgrimage will resume from tomorrow after the path was closed in the wake of a flood-like situation near the India-Pakistan border fence as the water level in the Ravi River rose. However, he advised local pilgrims to wait for the next two-three days if they can choose to come on a later date.

As per the Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner, the Indian authorities requested their Pakistani counterparts to get a safety assessment done in their area and let them know if everything is alright.

"Kartarpur Corridor was flooded in the past few days due to a rise in the water level of Ravi River. A few structures and roads were damaged. All officials inspected it today. The roads on the Indian side have been repaired. All the damages have been repaired. We have also been told that even on the Pakistan side, the situation is alright. In the interest of pilgrims, it has been decided to reopen the corridor tomorrow, 25th July," he told news agency ANI

132 pilgrims have registered themselves for tomorrow, he informed, advising locals to avoid the pilgrimage if they can re-register for a later date as there is a possibility of rain in the next two-three days.

Punjab Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Narinder Bhargav also visited the Kartarpur Corridor earlier in the evening and said that the water has receded to a great extent now.

The Kartarpur corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district.

The Kartarpur corridor was opened in 2019 on the occasion of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

Rains lashed many parts of Punjab and Haryana leading to a rise in the water levels of rivers. Because of the downpour, the water level in the Ravi River had risen by 20,000 cusecs.
