Parliament Session HIGHLIGHTS: BJP Parliamentary Party Meet To Be Held On December 19

Background

Parliament Winter Session HIGHLIGHTS: Hello and welcome to the Parliament Winter Session Live blog, please follow this space for all the latest updates and news on the Winter Session of the Parliament which began on December 4.

The winter session began just a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party swept the Assembly polls in three out of four states — Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

On the twelfth day of Parliament's Winter Session, a total of 14 MPs were suspended from the Parliament for the remainder of the winter session for their 'unruly behavior' during the proceedings.

Out of the 14 suspended MPs, nine are from Congress, two from Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM, one each from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Among the Lok Sabha MPs suspended were TN Prathapan, Hibi Eden, Jothimani, Ramya Haridas, Dean Kuriakose, VK Sreekandan, Benny Behanan, Mohammad Jawed, PR Natarajan, Kanimozhi, K Subbarayan, S Venkatesan and Manickam Tagore. Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien was also suspended.

Lok Sabha proceedings were interrupted on Thursday as the Opposition, led by Congress, created a ruckus and protested over the security lapse in which two persons -- Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D -- jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors' gallery and released gas from canisters on Wednesday.

The duo were overpowered by the MPs and handed over to security personnel. On the other hand, two other persons -- Amol Shinde and Neelam Devi -- were caught while protesting and releasing coloured smoke on a road outside Parliament.

A motion for the suspension of the MPs was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi amid vociferous protests and sloganeering by the Opposition members.

Opposition members demanded a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on the security breach that coincided with the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack.

It Is Ideal To Address National Security Issues In Parliament: RJD MP

“If they cannot say anything about the security breach in the Parliament, how can we expect them to say anything on the Galwan Valley issue… Our democracy has had a history of political declarations being made in the House when a session is in progress. Issues of a party or region can be addressed anywhere, but in cases of national security such as this, it is ideal to address the Parliament," RJD leader Manoj Jha told ANI.
