Coromandel Express Incident Among Worst Train Accidents In India — Know About Previous Cases

Three trains crashed into one other leaving 233 people dead and over 900 injured in Odisha. This is one of the most horrific train accidents in India's history since the Independence. Know about other train tragedies.

A horrific train accident in Odisha on Friday, involving three trains, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train left at least 233 people killed and more than 900 injured as the three trains collided one after another in a horrific sequence in Balasore district. The train crash happened near the Bahanaga Baazar station, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar, around 7 pm on Friday. According to the a PTI report, railway track were almost destroyed as mangled coaches lay strewn all over, some mounted over another, while a few others turned turtled due to impact.

This is one of the most horrific train accidents in India's history since the Independence.

Know about other train tragedies that have occurred in the nation:

  • Worst Train Accident in India: On June 6, 1981, India recorded its worst train accident which occurred in Bihar. A train fell into the river Bagmati while crossing a bridge, killing more than 750 people, PTI reported.

  • Pamban–Dhanuskodi Train: The Pamban–Dhanuskodi passenger train was washed away by the Rameswaram cyclone, killing over 126 passengers on board in December 23, 1964.
  • Purushottam Express collision: On August 20, 1995, Purushottam Express collided with the stationary Kalindi Express near Firozabad, around 305 were killed in the incident.

  • Gaisal train disaster: On August 2, 1999, the Brahmaputra Mail crashed into the stationary Avadh Assam Express at Gaisal station in North Frontier Railway's Katihar division, killing more than 285 people and injuring over 300. Many of the victims were Army, BSF, or CRPF personnel.

  • Rafiganj train derailment: The Rafiganj train wreck occurred on September 9, 2002, when the Howrah Rajdhani Express derailed over a bridge on the Dhave River in Rafiganj, killing more than 140 people. Terrorist sabotage was blamed for the incident, as per PTI.

  • Jnaneswari Express derailment: On May 28, 2010, the Jnaneswari Express, a Mumbai-bound train had derailed near Jhargram and was then hit by an oncoming goods train, leading to the death of 148 passengers.

  • Pukhrayan train derailment: The Pukhrayan train derailment occurred on November 20, 2016, 14 coaches of the Indore–Rajendra Nagar Express derailed at Pukhrayan, approximately 60 km from Kanpur, killing 152 people and injuring 260.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik declared one-day state mourning on Saturday in the wake of the deadly triple train crash.
