Najeeb Ahmed case: Delhi court directs CBI to give closure report documents to missing JNU student's mother

Najeeb Ahmed, an MSc first year student went missing from the Mahi-Mandvi hostel of Jawaharlal Nehru University nearly two years ago on October 15, 2016, following a scuffle with some other students, allegedly affiliated to the ABVP.

New Delhi: Delhi court on Monday directed the CBI to give copies of all statements and documents related to the closure report of the probe into missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed's case to his mother Fatima Nafees, within two weeks. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Naveen Kumar Kashyap directed the probe agency to supply the documents in physical or electronic form and asked the investigating officer of the case to appear before it in person on May 7. The court's order came while hearing a protest petition filed by Ahmed's mother, Fatima Nafees, against the Central Bureau of Investigation's closure report in the case. The lawyer appearing argued that she has not been supplied statement of witnesses. Najeeb Ahmed, an MSc first year student went missing from the Mahi-Mandvi hostel of Jawaharlal Nehru University nearly two years ago on October 15, 2016, following a scuffle with some other students, allegedly affiliated to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the previous night. The Central Bureau of Investigation had last October closed the case after the agency failed to trace him after a long search. In the month of September, a bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel had reserved its decision on the petition filed by the student’s mother after concluding hearing of arguments of her lawyer and of CBI. The CBI had taken over the investigation on May 16 last year. In its last hearing, the CBI counsel told the bench that the agency has analysed "everything" related to the matter, and wanted to file a final report seeking to close the case as it did not think that any offence was committed against the missing person. However, the lawyer for the student's mother, contended in court that it was a "political case" and that the "CBI has succumbed to the pressure of its masters". Recently, Fatima Nafees had travelled to Bihar's Begusarai when former JNU Student Union President Kanhaiya Kumar, filed his nomination, a move which attracted criticism on social media. She said she had gine ethere as a mother to bless Kumar, as he stood by her when Ahmed went missing. Nafees, a resident of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh which goes to poll on April 23, said representatives of various parties visit her house but they only express "sympathy". She said that she will vote for the party which promises to bring her son back.
