Mumbai Rains LIVE UPDATES: IMD Says 'Occasional Intense Spell' To Continue For 6 Hrs; Transport, Offices Shut

Background

Mumbai Rains HIGHLIGHTS: Massive rainfall has lashed Mumbai since Tuesday afternoon and is expected to turn more fierce in the city and suburbs today, said the officials of MeT.  Heavy showers overnight and early Wednesday morning caused waterlogging at many places in the metropolis, disrupting rail and road traffic.  Rains across the island city and the western suburbs picked up late Tuesday evening. There were intense spells across Mumbai for a few hours overnight.

The Santacruz observatory (in western suburbs) received 286.4 mm rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday, India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Mumbai told news agency PTI. The Colaba observatory (in south Mumbai) recorded 147.8 mm rainfall during the same period.

Mumbai received one of the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours, an IMD official told the news agency adding that the city and suburbs are likely to receive heavy showers on Wednesday also.

According to the IMD, rainfall recorded below 15 mm is considered light, between 15 and 64.5 mm is moderate and above 64.5 mm is heavy. Since June 1 this year, the Santacruz observatory has so far recorded 3,571.1 mm downpour, while the Colaba observatory has recorded 3,147.3 mm rainfall during the period.

As per latest updates, the heavy downpour has led to waterlogging in many parts of the metropolis on Wednesday, prompting disruption of road and rail traffic. Even public transport services were hit and normal life affected in the financial capital due to heavy downpour and waterlogging.

Several streets and low-lying areas were waterlogged due to overnight rains and the road traffic was also badly hit, a civic official said. Some vehicles broke down in the water, affecting the traffic movement.

Mumbai's municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has asked that all offices and establishments in the city, barring essential services, be shut on Wednesday due to the downpour and IMD's forecast of "heavy to very heavy rains" in the city.

Even the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked Mumbaikars not to step out of their homes, unless it is an emergency. Even the  suburban train services were suspended at 5 am on Wednesday following heavy rains along the tracks.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert with a forecast of heavy rainfall at some places in Mumbai and Thane during the day.
