Mumbai Rain: Severe Waterlogging, Landslide Reported. Heavy Showers Predicted In Next 24 Hrs

A landslide was reported in Ghatkopar, Panchsheel Nagar in Mumbai on Tuesday morning amidst the heavy rains.

New Delhi: Maharashtra's capital Mumbai is experiencing incessant rainfall and several areas of the maximum city have waterlogged on Tuesday. Due to the continuous downpour 8 routes in the city were diverted while people waded through knee-deep water to reach their destinations. Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport said that in view of the incessant rains in Mumbai and waterlogging due to it, a total of 8 route diversions have been done at Sion Road no. 24 and Shell Colony, Chembur in Mumbai.

Sion area of Mumbai is witnessing heavy waterlogging. The Andheri subway of the city is deluged amid the heavy rainfall. 

 

A landslide was reported in Ghatkopar, Panchsheel Nagar in Mumbai on Tuesday morning amidst the heavy rains. The Mumbai Fire department said that vehicles have reached the spot and no casualties reported so far.

Meanwhile, the local trains, which are considered the lifeline of Mumbai are running smoothly on both the Central Railway and Western Railway routes, according to a PTI report.

Over 75 lakh passengers from Mumbai and neighbouring districts travel in local trains every day.

"Trains on all corridors are running smoothly, though it's raining in the CSMT-Kurla-Thane section," the Central Railway's chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar said.

IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Mumbai in 24 Hrs

While the city is already lashed with heavy rain and most areas are waterlogged, the IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rain in Mumbai and its suburbs over the next 24 hours, with a possibility of very heavy showers at isolated places, civic officials said.

The island city received an average 95.81 mm rainfall in the 24 hour period ending at 8 am on Tuesday, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 115.09 mm and 116.73 mm rainfall, respectively, during the same period, they said.

The weather department has also predicted heavy to very heavy rain in neighbouring Thane district for the next few days.

On Monday, the IMD issued a 'yellow alert' for Mumbai and Thane, predicting heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over the next five days. 

CM Shinde asks NDRF to remain on standby

In the wake of heavy rainfall in various parts of the state, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde directed officials to monitor the situation and keep the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) squads ready, said the CM's office (CMO) on Tuesday.

Shinde held a discussion with Chief Secretary Manukumar Srivastava along with directing all the related districts' guardian secretaries to stay alert and control the situation.

The Chief Minister himself is in touch with the district collectors of all the districts of the Konkan region to ensure that there is no loss of life and property due to heavy rains in the next few days.
