Mumbai again: Incessant downpour throws life out of gear; Check pictures

The weather department has issued a high alert notice in Mumbai, Raigarh and Palghar.

New Delhi: Torrential rains are wreaking havoc in parts of country with Maharashtra being the worst-hit state. As the state grapples with intensive flooding, the commercial capital of the country Mumbai comes to a stand-still again after receiving 24 hours of incessant downpour. The weather department has issued a high alert notice in Mumbai, Raigarh and Palghar. As per the latest updates parts of Mumbai like Ghatkopar, Sion, Bhandup and Mulund are being lashed with heavy showers. As per reports, the city has received 50 mm rainfall in past 24 hours. The Lokmanya Tilak Terminal witnessed one-foot deep water logging making commutation a serious problem.  The local trains on Mumbai’s central line are running 15 minutes late while those on Harbour and Western lines are running as per normal schedule. Ghatkopar bridge that developed a crack has been shut down. Apart from Nagpur and Mumbai, Bhiwandi is also facing a breakdown of civic machinery after being lashed by very heavy rains. Vasai mishap: One out of 40 picnickers at Chinchoti falls in Maharashtra, died as the water level rose dangerously. After rescue operation that continued for hours, the other stranded people were saved. The 40 people had gone for a picnic in Mumbai’s Vasai, where at the Chinchoti falls the water level ascended significantly due to a sudden downpour. With the help from NDRF and air force, the people trapped in water could be saved. 5 were saved from helicopters and 34 others were rescued with the help of a rope. Police identified the deceased as Bhavesh Gupta (35) and added that most of the people who had visited the site were from northern Mumbai suburbs like Kandivali, Borivali and Malad besides Santacruz. Apart from Maharashtra, life in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have also come to standstill because of the incessant rains.
